A Hollywood police officer fired their gun and killed one person while responding to the scene of a dispute between neighbors regarding a vandalism that took place Thursday morninglccplus, authorities say.
At about 9:40 a.m. officers, arrived at the intersection of North 66th Avenue and Eaton Street and met with the caller.
While the officer was investigating the vandalism, the suspect began attacking the officer and a physical altercation ensued, according to Deanna Bettineschi, Hollywood Police spokesperson.
The officer first shot a taser that was ineffective and “in fear of their life” fired a gun at the suspect. The suspect, who police have not identified, was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police say the officer was taken to a hospital with injuries but has since been discharged.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the use of force.
